INTERLUX® EMPLOYEES PAINT A BOAT
TO EXPERIENCE THE PROCESS FIRST HAND

Interlux boat painting project

Union, New Jersey, November 3, 2011- Employees at Interlux® North America headquarters in New Jersey recently applied the company’s antifouling, topcoat and deck paint systems to better understand what Interlux customers experience during the bottom painting process and to familiarize themselves with the products the company manufactures.

Products applied included InterProtect 2000E epoxy barrier coat, Trilux 33 antifouling, 404 Epoxy primer, Perfection topcoat and Interdeck.

The company acquired a Catalina 22 in need of serious restoration and employees from the factory, warehouse, customer service, accounting and purchasing departments got the opportunity to see first hand how to restore the exterior of a boat to make it look like new.

However, only half the boat was painted from bow to stern. “We decided to use the opportunity to educate and inform boat owners what they can truly achieve, without much knowledge or training in paint. There is nothing like showing the ‘before and after’. It’s really striking what you can do. This boat was in very poor condition, so if you have a boat in reasonable condition, the job will be even easier. If you can paint your kitchen cabinets, you can paint your boat,” said Interlux North America Marketing Manager Elenor Ekman.

Interlux documented the painting project, now available in a booklet at www.yachtpaint.com/usa. The Catalina 22 is now a display unit, used for training & events in the northeast US.

Rozalia Project For A Clean Ocean Wins 2011 Interlux®
Waterfront Challenge $20,000 National Award

Five other community groups win regional awards of $4,500 each

Interlux Waterfront Challenge 2011 National Winner
In a video, Rachael Miller of the Rozalia Project For A Clean Ocean speaks to a group
of young sailors about the ever-growing problem of micro-plastic in our waters.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida (USA), October 28, 2011 - In a ceremony today at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, the Rozalia Project For A Clean Ocean received a $20,000 check from Interlux® as the national winner of the 2011 Interlux Waterfront Challenge.

The company also announced that five other organizations will receive checks of $4,500 each as the regional winners of the 2011 Waterfront Challenge, for creating sustainable waterfront environmental improvements in their communities.

The Vermont-based Rozalia Project For A Clean Ocean utilized a state-of-the-art, remote operated underwater vehicle (ROV) to assist nearly 1,400 people to remove over 4,400 pieces of marine debris from the sea floor in eight locations throughout New England. “We’re incredibly thrilled to receive this generous award from Interlux,” said Rachael Miller, who co-founded the Rozalia Project with her husband, James Lyne. “The funds will enable Rozalia Project to keep pushing forward with cleaning up our oceans and waterways from the surface to the seafloor, inspiring people of all ages to be part of the solution and learning more about the problem of marine debris in order to discover ways to reduce and reverse its effects,” Miller added.

“The widespread, positive impact on our environment and the involvement of so many people in the Rozalia Project represents everything we could possibly hope for in the national winner of the Interlux Waterfront Challenge,” said Elenor Ekman, Interlux North America marketing manager.

The five regional winners of 2011 Interlux Waterfront Challenge awards of $4,500 each were: Chester’s Cutting Crew (Port Ewen, NY), for developing an ongoing program to rid a local beach of invasive water chestnuts; South River Federation (Edgewater, MD), for removing almost 13 tons of trash from a local creek; Sea Scout Ship 41 (Bay Village, OH), for designing a crusher for used oil filters to help marinas properly dispose of them; Shake-A-Leg (Miami, FL), for cleaning up a beach on an offshore island, replanting native mangrove and collecting seed specimens to help replant mangroves in other environmentally challenged areas; and Citizens For A Healthy Bay (Tacoma, WA), for the removal of litter and other debris along a blighted portion of Commencement Bay.

The judges for the 2011 Interlux Waterfront Challenge were: Thom Dammrich, President of the National Marine Manufacturers Association; Fred Daoust, General Manager, Interlux North America; John Kelly, Chairman of the American Coatings Association Antifouling Working Group and a member of the California State Lands Commission Fouling Technical Advisory Group; Dan Pingaro, CEO of Sailors for the Sea; and Susan Shingledecker, Director of Environmental Programs for the BoatU.S. Foundation for Boating Safety & Clean Water.

In addition, more than 5,000 boaters helped the judges choose the regional award winners by voting for their favorite project at the Interlux Waterfront Challenge page on Facebook.

Information about the 2012 Interlux Waterfront Challenge will be available in February.

$50,000 in Waterfront Cleanup Project Grants Available
August 31 Deadline For Applications

Waterfront Challenge video clip

The deadline for 2011 Interlux Waterfront Challenge grant applications is August 31 and the company has just released a commercial, airing on Ship Shape TV, designed to encourage community organizations to apply.

Ship Shape TV is a weekly half hour boat improvement "how-to" television series, similar in format to some of today's most successful home improvement TV shows. Each week, host John Greviskis teaches viewers how-to accessorize their boats, how-to make improvements and how-to make repairs to their boats. The program airs nationally on Comcast, FSN-College, Tuff-TV and Retro-TV and on regional networks including FSN (Fox SportsNet) -New York, FSN-Florida and FSN-South, along with a classic show on Sun Sports.

Recently, John Greviskis and his family collected trash and other debris from the water near his Florida home and at their summer home in the Adirondack State Park. The Waterfront Challenge commercial features video of their experience. "While my family devoted many hours to picking up trash and debris on the water near our homes, if every boater takes just an hour or two helping to clean up their favorite waterway, just imagine what an impact that could have,” Greviskis said.

For more information about Ship Shape TV, visit www.shipshapetv.com.

Interlux will award $50,000 in grants in October 2011 to organizations to create sustainable waterfront environmental improvements in their communities. Eight grants from $4,500 to $20,000 will be awarded to groups in the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean.

A five-judge panel of marine industry leaders who share a passion for protecting our waters - with the help of boaters voting on Facebook for their favorite projects among the applications - will select 7 regional winners to be awarded grants of $4,500 each and a grand prize winner to be awarded a grant of $20,000. Interlux Press Release

Interlux® To Paint Manufacturers: “Put the Tributyl-tin–containing Antifoulings To Bed”

UNION, NEW JERSEY (USA), APRIL 28, 2011 – Interlux, a world leader in antifoulings, says it’s surprised to find companies are still promoting the harmful organotin compound for use in American waters. Prompted by such irresponsible activities, the company issues the following update & advice:

On September 17, 2008, the International Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti-Fouling Systems on Ships (“AFS Treaty”) was enacted on a global basis (for all countries that have ratified the treaty), banning the presence of Tributyl-tin (“TBT”) on boats. While ratification by the US Congress is still due, this global ban does affect many American boat owners.

Key Facts:

• The harmful environmental effects of organotin compounds were recognized by IMO in 1989.
• In 1990, IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) adopted a resolution recommending that governments establish measures to eliminate the use of antifouling paint containing TBT on hulls less than 25 meters in length.
• In 1999, IMO adopted an Assembly Resolution that called for a global prohibition of TBT-containing antifouling by January 2008.
• In October 2001, the AFS Treaty was adopted.
• On September 17, 2008, the AFS Treaty was enacted. The treaty provided that boats shall not have TBT-antifouling or such compounds on their hulls and external parts and surfaces or shall bear a coating that forms a barrier to such compounds leaching from the underlying, non-compliant antifouling system.
• To date (March 2011), 50 parties have ratified the AFS Treaty, representing over 78% of the world’s shipping tonnage.
• The AFS Treaty bans the sale, application and presence of TBT-based antifoulings.

Considerations for American Boaters

Don’t:
• Enter Antigua, Barbuda, Bahamas, Saint Kitts & Nevis with TBT paint on your boat. This is illegal.
• Enter European waters such as the Mediterranean. It’s illegal. The ban has been adopted by the European Union.
• Have TBT-based antifouling applied in the geographical areas noted above. It’s illegal.
• Forget to carry paperwork onboard to show compliance*.
• Try and transport your boat using International Boat Shipping services without confirming and declaring antifouling compliance for the destination port. Port Authority Control can decline entry and/or issue significant fines for breach of Treaty!
• Let other paint companies tell you TBT-containing paint is the right choice. With today’s technology, it is not.
• Forget that Our World is Water.

*The AFS Treaty covers all ships regardless of size but in order to ensure compliance to the treaty only ships over 400 gross tonnage will be required to carry a Certificate showing the current coating is in compliance with the treaty. Ships greater than 24 meters but less than 400 gross tonnage shall be required to carry a Declaration signed by the owner along with an appropriate document such as a paint receipt to show compliance.

Do:
• Select the high performance replacement technologies that work (without the TBT), such as the Self-Polishing Copolymer technology that provides longevity and peace-of-mind. The Interlux product is Micron® 66®.
• Consider the environment and the condition of your local waters. International Paint used TBT in antifouling paints until 2001 when we revolutionized the market with the break-through of the first, copper-based, true Self Polishing Copolymer (SPC) Technology. We found a replacement and we voluntarily withdrew TBT from all our manufacturing sites world-wide, prior to the ban. A responsible company is a pro-active company.
• Refuse stocking or purchasing of TBT-containing antifoulings with the objective of environmental improvement. Great performing replacement technologies are available. Would you paint your kitchen with a lead-based paint, knowing what we know today?

To fully understand the AFS treaty you can view or download a copy from the IMO web site, www.imo.org or at www.antifoulingpaint.com.

UNION, NEW JERSEY (USA), FEBRUARY 22, 2011 – Interlux is proud to announce its partnership with Brunswick Boat Group, where Fiberglass Bottomkote Aqua has been selected as the premier product in all Sea Ray, Meridian and Bayliner production.

Fiberglass Bottomkote Aqua is a durable, smooth finish with stable colors. The low odor formulation has extremely low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) content, making it highly suitable for a manufacturing environment with minimum disruption and reduced stack emissions.

Interlux® To Feature Pacifica Plus Copper Free and
Fiberglass Bottomkote® NT Antifouling Paints
At Miami 2011, February 17-21

See at Booth M69, Miami Beach Convention Center and
Yacht & Brokerage Show Ramp 15, Yacht Equipment Pavilion 74-75

Interlux Pacifica Plus and Fiberglass Bottomkote NT antifouling paints

UNION, NEW JERSEY (USA), FEBRUARY 9, 2011 – Interlux®, manufacturer of high performance yacht coatings, will feature Pacifica Plus with Econea™ copper free antifouling paint and Fiberglass Bottomkote® NT antifouling paint with dual resin technology February 17-21 at the 2011 Miami International Boat Show (Miami Beach Convention Center Booth M69) and at the 2011 Miami Yacht & Brokerage Show (Ramp 15 - Yacht Equipment Pavilion 74-75).

Pacifica Plus is the first antifouling paint with Econea for pleasure craft. Econea is an antifouling agent that targets shell fouling. Pacifica Plus provides an alternative to boat owners, boatyards and those in the boating community looking for a high performance paint, but without the copper.

Formulated to meet the most stringent VOC regulations in the country, Pacifica Plus uses a controlled biocide release mechanism to combat fouling and Biolux® Technology to control slime. It erodes away over time, which reduces paint build-up and minimizes surface preparation when it is time to recoat.

Boatyards will appreciate the fast-dry properties of Pacifica Plus, which allow boats to be painted and launched the same day. Available in clean, crisp, bright colors including blue, black and red and compatible with most other antifouling paints. Ideal for use on all underwater metal surfaces including fiberglass, wood and aluminum. The high solids, low VOC formula has proven effective for power and sail boats. Manufactured and for sale in the USA only.

Optimized using a dual resin blend to deliver a unique, durable & fast-drying antifouling paint that offers the benefits of both hard and ablative antifouling paints, Fiberglass Bottomkote® NT has the durability of a traditional hard paint but with a built-in slow polishing that continuously smoothes and renews the active surface. The fast dry formula allows a boat to be painted and launched in the same day.

Suitable for the underwater surfaces of fiberglass, wood, and properly primed metal (except aluminum) power and sail boat hulls in fresh, brackish and salt water, Fiberglass Bottomkote® NT can be applied over most other antifouling paints, provided the old coating is tightly adhered and is in sound condition. Available in red, green, blue and black in US quart and one gallon cans and three gallon pails. Manufactured and for sale in the USA only.

Ocean 58 Super Sport Enclosed Flybridge
Features Interlux® Hull Protection & Antifouling Products

UNION, NEW JERSEY (USA), November 24, 2010 – The hull and running surface of the newest Ocean 58 Super Sport Enclosed Flybridge was prepared and finished with Interlux® hull protection and antifouling products - Fiberglass Surface Prep, InterProtect® 2000e & Micron® CSC.

Ocean 58
Ocean 58 Super Sport Enclosed Flybridge hull #4 was prepped and finished
with Interlux products at the Ocean Yachts factory
.

“Interlux has been the bottom paint of choice at Ocean Yachts for years. Our most recent build, a 58 Super Sport Enclosed Flybridge, is no exception. We choose Interlux because of its reliability and outstanding OEM support,” said Ocean Yachts, Inc. General Manager John E. Leek IV.

Fiberglass Surface Prep is a mold release agent and wax remover, which precludes the need for sanding bare fiberglass when used with the Interlux Ultimate No Sand System, saving some OEM's up to 40% in labor/project time (in total) when compared to a standard sanding system.

Interprotect® 2000E with Microplates® is a unique two-part epoxy coating developed to protect fiberglass hulls from water absorption, and to form an excellent key for adhesion for subsequent Interlux Antifoulings such as the Micron Technology. Microplates® create an overlapping barrier to help stop water migration through the coating. The Interprotect® system has been the system of choice for North America’s premier boat yard and boat builders since the early 1980’s.

Micron CSC uses Micron® Technology to provide excellent, long lasting antifouling protection against all types of fouling. Controlled polishing rate reduces build-up of old coatings and minimizes sanding. It also allows haul-out and re-launch without repainting. Micron Technology uses less copper more efficiently than old fashioned high copper bottom paints, hence provides excellent long term protection.

Pacifica Plus – New Color & Pack Sizes

Interlux Pacifica Plus

Pacifica Plus is the first bottom paint in the yacht market with Econea™. A copper-free antifouling, Pacifica Plus is an ablative paint formulated to meet the most stringent VOC regulations. It wears away over time, which reduces paint build-up and minimizes surface preparation when it is time to recoat. Pacifica Plus also performs great on aluminum substrates, avoiding any paint-related corrosion concerns. The high solids, low emissions formula of Pacifica Plus has proven effective for power and sail boats. Now available in green, with new quart sizes for blue and black.

Trilux® 33™ Aerosol – New Color

Interlux Trilux 33 Aerosol

Trilux 33 Aerosol antifouling paint is specially formulated for aluminum outboards, outdrives and aluminum hulls in fresh, salt and brackish water. It uses two biocides and Biolux technology to control slime growth. Dries to the touch in one hour or less and boats can be put back in the water generally within 24 hours. Interlux Launches New Yacht Paint Web Site
For Boat Owners & Professional Applicators

www.yachtpaint.com makes paint selection easier, offers more tech support

New Interlux Web Site

UNION, NEW JERSEY (USA) – Yacht paint manufacturer Interlux has launched a new web site at www.yachtpaint.com that makes it easier for boat owners and professional paint applicators to choose the right Interlux product, get technical information and support for any paint project.

“Much of the information available online about yacht paint is, frankly, pretty boring,” said Elenor Ekman, Interlux North America Marketing Manager. “With our new web site, we’ve incorporated video, interactive tools and community-building techniques to engage visitors and make the process of gathering and using information about Interlux products and painting a boat a little more interesting,” she added.

For boat owners, the emphasis at the new yachtpaint.com is on choosing the correct Interlux paint depending on the type of boat, boating activity and water. “Paint Your Boat” allows boaters to see how different paint colors look on a hull. A new forum allows owners to ask questions and share information with each other. An enhanced “Ask The Expert” provides easier access to the extensive knowledge base and experience of the Interlux Technical Service staff.

Professional paint applicators now have a dedicated ‘microsite’ within yachtpaint.com where they can get detailed information about Interlux yacht paint systems, calculate VOCs and quickly find their local distributor of Interlux products.

For all visitors, yachtpaint.com also offers information, news and advice about environmental issues.

For more information about Interlux products, visit www.yachtpaint.com.

Interlux Yacht Finishes

New Interlux® Fiberglass Bottomkote® NT Antifouling With Dual Resin Technology
Provides Universal Solution for Boat Yards and Consumers

UNION, NEW JERSEY (USA) – Interlux®, the leading manufacturer of high performance yacht coatings, has introduced Fiberglass Bottomkote® NT Antifouling, which is optimized using a dual resin blend - delivering a unique, durable & fast-drying antifouling paint that offers the benefits of both hard and ablative antifouling paints.

Interlux Fiberglass Bottomkote NT Antifouling Paint

Fiberglass Bottomkote® NT has the durability of a traditional hard paint but with a slow polishing mechanism built-in that continuously smoothes and renews the active surface, avoiding the heavy build-up of paint layers like a traditional polishing paint.

For more information about Fiberglass Bottomkote® NT and other Interlux® products, contact your local Interlux dealer or visit www.yachtpaint.com/usa.

Oil Spill Cleanup Tips For Boaters
From Interlux® and Awlgrip®

Tech Hotlines Also Open
Interlux 800.468.7589
Awlgrip 888.355.3090

UNION, NEW JERSEY (USA) – In the wake of what could be the largest oil spill in US history, leading yacht paint manufacturers Interlux and Awlgrip offer boaters in the impacted areas the following tips to help clean contaminated boats.

INTERLUX GUIDELINES: TREATMENT OF ANTIFOULING CONTAMINATED WITH OIL
The surface of an antifouling paint that has become contaminated with oil can become “blocked” i.e preventing the biocide from being released, which subsequently leads to premature fouling. It will also result in a contaminated layer that will make adhesion of new antifouling applications difficult.

Cleaning of contaminated antifouling surfaces:

For hard polishing and ablative antifouling paints that have been heavily contaminated the best method to use when treating the bottom is to use a paint-stripper such as Interstrip 299e to remove all the pollution and the paint, then scrub the substrate using Fiberglass Surface Prep YMA601 and a coarse Scotch-Brite pad. Rinse with fresh water. Repeat until the surface is clean (when the water cascades off of the surface with no beading or separating). Allow the surface to dry thoroughly prior to re-painting. The same process is recommended on metal boats however to avoid corrosion the metal substrate should be prepared by grinding or blasting after the cleaning process and prior to priming. To aid adhesion apply InterProtect 2000E primer per label instructions.

Sanding or sand blasting a surface that still has oil on it may drive the oil into the surface and cause a loss of adhesion of the subsequent coats.

If the coating of oil is light, powerwash and then use a household detergent with water to scrub off any pollution. Then scrub using Fiberglass Surface Prep YMA601 and a coarse Scotch-Brite pad and rinse thoroughly with fresh water. Let dry prior to re-painting. Polishing paints such as Micron Technology, may be re-launched without painting assuming the film thickness of remaining paint is adequate (2-3 mils dry after scrubbing) & the next application is scheduled within 5 months.

AWLGRIP GUIDELINES: TREATMENT OF TOPCOATS CONTAMINATED WITH OIL

Cleaning of contaminated topcoat surfaces:

Contaminated topcoats should be cleaned as soon as practically possible to minimize the damaging effects of the crude. If the surface of a topcoat is contaminated with crude oil, staining and possible degradation of the topcoat may result from the acidic nature of the contaminant. The recommendations below apply to Awlgrip®, Awlcraft® 2000 and Interlux® Perfection topcoats. If there is any doubt of the type of surface in question always test a small area first.

In the case of heavy contamination, the material may be a thick, sticky tar-like material due to its exposure to the elements. It is recommended that these surfaces first be cleared by wipe down with T0016, T0170 or Mineral Spirits followed by power washing, and then cleaned with Awlwash® at a 4 oz/gallon level (or household liquid detergents such as Dawn). The detergent washing step of the cleaning process must be done in manageable areas. Each area should be then be thoroughly rinsed with plenty of clean water before moving on to the next. DO NOT allow detergent solutions to dry on the surface.

Hulls exhibiting ‘sheen’ contamination may be cleaned with the regular concentration levels of Awlwash, though they too may benefit from a prewash wipe down with T0016, T0170 or Mineral Spirits to loosen the film.

In both cases, it is recommended that the newly cleaned surface be protected from further contamination with application of Awlcare®.

IN ALL CASES:

Contaminated waste water should be collected per local marina guidelines, local authority regulations and/or Clean Water Act requirements. Collecting the water and the emulsified crude will prevent spreading of contamination. Crude and solvent contaminated wipes must also be disposed of in a responsible manner.

New Viking 70 Convertible Features Interlux® Micron® Technology

UNION, NEW JERSEY (USA) – The running surface of each new Viking 70 Convertible (hull #1 is due this summer) will leave the Viking Yachts factory with the premium Interlux® Micron® Technology antifouling system.

Interlux Micron Technology antifouling system at the Viking factory
.

Widely recognized by sportfishing anglers for their speed and sea-kindly performance in blue water, Viking is working closely with Interlux to achieve maximum efficiencies from the aggressively-designed hull of the new 70. “Vikings are designed and built to perform around the world as hard-core tournament fishing machines and luxurious cruising yachts. Micron paint provides exceptional anti-fouling protection that enhances this performance,” says Peter Frederiksen, Viking Yacht’s Director of Communications.

Interlux Micron antifouling paints are designed for multi-season use – boats can be hauled and re-launched without repainting.

The polishing action of Micron Technology products such as Micron CSC, Micron Extra and Micron 66® yields a smoother surface than hard antifoulings to maximize on fuel economy and unlike old-fashioned high copper bottom paints, Micron uses less copper more efficiently for the longest-lasting antifouling protection. With world-wide recognition and premier brand association, Micron Technology continues to be a preferred choice by boat builders, boat yards and boat owners.
