How To Winterize Ethanol Gasoline and Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel

NORTHBROOK, ILLINOIS – Ethanol blended gasoline and ultra low sulfur diesel fuel need more than just a stabilizer to help protect marine engines over the winter, according to ValvTect Petroleum, the nation’s leading supplier of marine grade gasoline, diesel fuel and fuel additives.

Ethanol blended gasoline can contain up to 30 times more water than non-ethanol gasoline, which can cause corrosion and phase separation (drop out of the ethanol and water to the bottom of the fuel tank) over the winter. It also destabilizes much faster and that gums up carburetors and injectors. “While most conventional stabilizers can keep ethanol blended gasoline stable, they don’t have a corrosion inhibitor to prevent corrosion or chemistry to help keep the ethanol and water from separating from the fuel,” said ValvTect President Jerry Nessenson.

ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline Treatment contains the most advanced and proven technology to prevent corrosion, control moisture and stabilize the fuel.

ValvTect fuel winterizing products

Ultra low sulfur diesel also contains more water and is less stable than the former higher sulfur diesel fuel. “The biggest problem with ultra low sulfur diesel is that it is much more susceptible to bacteria growth that plugs filters and can cause corrosion,” Nessenson said.

Previously, to mitigate the negative effects of ultra low sulfur fuel, diesel boaters would have to add several different additives such as a biocide, moisture dispersant, corrosion inhibitor and a stabilizer. “With the introduction of ValvTect BioGuard Plus 6™, our new multifunctional biocide that contains BioGuard biocide plus a stabilizer, corrosion inhibitor, moisture dispersant, lubricity improver and cetane improver, boaters can now use one convenient product that has all the components and in the correct ratio,” Jerry Nessenson said.

ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline Treatment and BioGuard Plus 6 are available at West Marine and marine dealers nationwide. For more information about ValvTect products, visit www.valvtect.com or call 1+847.272.2278.

ValvTect Treated Fuels Hit Over 1 Billion Gallons

ValvTect Products

NORTHBROOK, ILLINOIS (USA) JULY 18, 2011 - ValvTect Petroleum, the USA’s largest manufacturer and supplier of fuel additives to gasoline and diesel distributors, the nation’s largest fleets, railroads, engine manufacturers and several refineries, announced today that over one billion gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel were treated with its ValvTect and Diesel Guard fuel additives last year.

“To put this in perspective, one billion gallons of fuel is more than enough fuel to power every car, truck, power boat and piece of farm and construction equipment in the United States for more than two days,” said Jerry Nessenson, President of ValvTect. “We are very proud to reach this milestone. It is especially gratifying since, due to the economy and high fuel prices, demand for gasoline and diesel is still off as much as 20% in some markets, including marine and over the road diesel fuel,” he added.

While most people in the marine industry know the ValvTect name through ValvTect Marine Fuels that are sold at many of the nation’s marinas and ValvTect aftermarket products, ValvTect Diesel Guard, AgriGuard and ThermoGuard brands enjoy major shares of the fleet, truck stop, farm fuel and heating oil markets. The company also supplies several refineries and produces private label additives for some of the world’s largest engine manufacturers.

“Many fuel additives in the market today use unproven technology and/or do not meet petroleum industry and/or engine manufacturer standards. These products promise to restore bad or phase separated fuel, which is not possible and can even be unsafe. Frankly, since problems such as corrosion, engine deposits and phase separation can take a long period of time to develop, the suppliers of these additive products can get away with producing inferior or potentially damaging products,” Nessenson said.

Every ValvTect, Diesel Guard and ThermoGuard product is formulated with the same fuel additive technology that is used by virtually every refiner in the world and approved by every engine manufacturer. “Our products are rigorously tested under ASTM, SAE and other petroleum industry standards and protocols to meet performance and long term, no harm standards. This process assures our distributors, dealers and consumers that ValvTect has completed all the necessary due diligence tests and our products will provide the performance and benefits as claimed,” Nessenson said.

“ValvTect Petroleum will celebrate our 25th anniversary soon. We want to thank all our customers for the confidence and support they have provided over the years and we look forward to being of service in the future,” Nessenson concluded.

EPA Approves New One of a Kind Diesel Additive for Marine Use
ValvTect BioGuard Plus 6™ prevents bacteria and solves all other
diesel fuel related problems - eliminates need for multiple products

ValvTect BioGuard Plus 6

NORTHBROOK, ILLINOIS, JUNE 23, 2011 – Jerry Nessenson, president of ValvTect Petroleum, announced today that ValvTect has received formal approval for the registration and sale of ValvTect BioGuard Plus 6™ multifunctional biocide diesel additive from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and in all 50 states.

“Prior to the EPA’s approval of ValvTect BioGuard Plus 6, all biocides registered for use in ultra low sulfur diesel fuel were single function biocides designed to only kill or prevent bacteria. Now boaters can use BioGuard Plus 6, a single formula, multifunctional biocide that also includes a stabilizer, corrosion inhibitor, moisture dispersant, detergent, cetane improver and lubricity improver, all in one convenient container,” Nessenson said.

PHOTO CAPTION: EPA approves ValvTect BioGuard Plus 6™, the only biocide that prevents bacteria and provides six other benefits.

Ultra low sulfur diesel fuel, now required by the EPA to be sold by virtually all marinas, contains less than 15 parts per million (a 90% reduction) of sulfur and is better for the environment. However, it can cause a multitude of fuel related problems and requires more than just a biocide that only prevents bacteria.

Ultra low sulfur diesel fuel quickly becomes unstable and contains a high moisture content that leads to corrosion, sludge and plugged fuel filters. More importantly, the sulfur in high sulfur diesel fuel lubricated the fuel injectors and fuel pump. The lack of lubrication can cause expensive premature failure of injectors and fuel pumps unless the ultra low sulfur diesel is treated with a lubricity improver.

“To offset the multiple problems that can be caused by ultra low sulfur diesel fuel, boaters have been forced to use several products. This has been a confusing, inconvenient and expensive process. ValvTect’s BioGuard Plus 6 contains BioGuard micro-biocide and six other additional components, including a lubricity improver, all compatible and in the correct ratios, to provide boaters with the best protection at the lowest cost,” Jerry Nessenson said.

BioGuard Plus 6 is now available at West Marine and other marine supply dealers across the US in quart containers that treat 375 gallons and one gallon containers that treat 1,500 gallons of diesel fuel. For more information, visit www.valvtect.com, call 1+800.728.8258 (US) or email valvtect@valvtect.com.

ValvTect Marine Fuels
Now Available At SkipperBud’s Marinas

Reef Point Marina

SkipperBud's, one of the largest marina operators and boat dealers in the US, now offers ValvTect Marine Fuels at five SkipperBud's marinas, including Reef Point Marina in Racine, Wisconsin.

NORTHBROOK, ILLINOIS (USA) – ValvTect Petroleum is proud to announce the certification of five SkipperBud’s marinas located in Illinois, Wisconsin and Arizona as Certified ValvTect Marinas.

“We are very pleased that SkipperBud’s has joined the nationwide network of high quality marinas offering ValvTect Marine Fuels. These marine grade fuels are specially formulated for heavy duty marine engines and will help provide improved fuel economy, longer engine life and most importantly help prevent problems associated with ultra low sulfur diesel and ethanol blended gasoline,” said Jerry Nessenson, President of ValvTect Petroleum.

“We are pleased to provide ValvTect Marine Gasoline and ValvTect Marine Diesel that are specially formulated for our customers’ marine engines instead of automotive grade of fuels. SkipperBud’s mission is to provide our customers the highest quality products and services to help obtain the most trouble free experience when boating. Offering ValvTect Marine Fuels is in keeping with our mission that has allowed SkipperBud’s to be designated as one the marine industry’s Top 100 dealers,” said Todd Suchomel, SkipperBud’s Marina Operations Manager.

ValvTect Marine Gasoline contains ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline Treatment that helps prevent ethanol related problems such as fuel destabilization, corrosion and phase separation. It also contains a unique premium gasoline detergent that cleans carbon deposits ("gunk") from the fuel system. A clean fuel system can extend engine life, improve engine performance and improve fuel economy as much as two to four percent.

“Use of other fuel additives is not necessary with ValvTect Marine Fuels, so ValvTect saves our customers money each time they fill up at our fuel docks which is very important, especially during this time of high fuel prices,” Suchomel added.

ValvTect Marine Premium Diesel contains BioGuard micro-biocide and Diesel Guard Premium Diesel additive. It is specially formulated with BioGuard to prevent bacteria, one of the most serious fuel related problems encountered by diesel boat owners. Diesel Guard premium diesel additive stabilizes the fuel to prevent sludge and filter plugging, prevents corrosion, lubricates and keeps injectors clean, and can virtually eliminate offensive smoke, odor and transom soot. Extensive SAE Type fuel economy tests have documented ValvTect Marine Premium Diesel to reduce fuel consumption an average of six percent.

“By offering ValvTect Marine Fuels at SkipperBud’s fuel docks, we are taking an important step to help our customers improve their boating experience,” said Todd Suchomel.

What You Don’t Know About Boat Fuel Systems
Can Cause Even More Pain At the Pump

NORTHBROOK, ILLINOIS (USA) – With fuel prices expected to stay at high levels throughout the boating season, getting the most mileage out of each gallon of gasoline or diesel fuel is more important than ever.

Most boaters are aware of fundamental things they can do to improve fuel economy and reduce fuel consumption such as: reducing speed; lightening the load; having a clean bottom (hull); properly setting the trim tabs or outdrives; and using the proper size and pitched prop.

“However, most boaters don't know that engine deposits - unburned fuel called “gunk” - can significantly increase fuel consumption,” said Jerry Nessenson, President of ValvTect Petroleum, the USA’s leading supplier of marine grade gasoline and diesel fuel to marinas.

“An engine gets its best fuel economy when it is new and free of deposits. As an engine burns fuel, it develops carbon deposits on valves, pistons, carburetors and fuel injectors that cause the engine to burn more fuel and emit more harmful exhaust emissions than a new deposit free engine. But only a few engines are new and free of deposits, so using a fuel that can prevent and clean-up engine deposits can significantly reduce fuel consumption,” Nessenson added.

“Deposits have an even greater negative impact in marine engines than automotive engines as they operate at much higher RPMs and loads, can use up to 10 times more fuel per hour and develop more harmful deposits,” Nessenson said. “Automotive grade gasoline contains some detergent additive to help keep the engine’s fuel system clean, but typically not enough detergent to prevent deposits from forming in a marine engine’s fuel system. Truck grade diesel fuel typically does not contain any detergent additive,” he added.

ValvTect Marine Gasoline contains ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline Treatment and ValvTect Marine Diesel contains ValvTect BioGuard Plus 6. Both additives contain ValvTect’s proprietary detergent additives that are designed to keep deposits from forming and clean-up existing deposits to help restore the engine’s fuel system to a “like new” condition. Both have been proven by independent testing to reduce harmful exhaust emissions and reduce fuel consumption. “Achieving even a small reduction in fuel consumption, say three (3) percent, would be equivalent to saving 13 cents per gallon, based on a fuel cost of $4.50 per gallon,” Jerry Nessenson said.

ValvTect Marine Fuels gas and diesel engine test results
Engine deposits (called gunk) cause your boat’s engine to use more fuel than a deposit free engine. Tests show ValvTect Marine Fuels can not only prevent carbon deposits but can clean up and remove existing deposits to help reduce fuel consumption.

ValvTect Marine Fuels are specially formulated to meet the heavy demands and operating conditions of marine engines. They can only be purchased at Certified ValvTect Marinas. ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline Treatment and BioGuard Plus 6 that are contained in ValvTect Marine Fuels can be purchased in aftermarket containers at most marine supply stores across the US.

ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline Treatment
Helps Prevent Ethanol Gasoline Problems

ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline Treatment

NORTHBROOK, ILLINOIS (USA) – ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline Treatment can help boat owners avoid problems that can be caused by ethanol blended gasoline. Ethanol gasoline can destabilize very quickly, cause corrosion and some problems to the fuel delivery systems and engine components.

Many gasoline stabilizers provide improved stabilization, but they don’t provide protection against corrosion and phase separation. To help prevent the damaging effects of ethanol, ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline Treatment is specially formulated to provide stabilization (for up to two years), prevent corrosion of internal engine components and help prevent phase separation.

In independent laboratory tests, ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline Treatment improved the stability of E10 gasoline (10% ethanol and 90% gasoline) by 186%, received a perfect A rating (the best possible rating) for corrosion prevention and showed the ability to retain moisture and ethanol in E10 fuel that can help prevent phase separation. VT8000 gasoline detergent cleans injectors and intake valves to restore power and decrease fuel consumption.

About ValvTect Marine Fuels

ValvTect Marine Fuel Pump

ValvTect Petroleum supplies over 500 ValvTect Certified Marinas across the U.S. and the Caribbean with gasoline and diesel fuel that are specially-formulated for marine engines to prevent fuel-related problems from ethanol blended gasoline and ultra low sulfur diesel fuel.

Before a marina is allowed to sell ValvTect Marine Fuels and up to twice a year thereafter, they must have their fuel storage tanks tested for contamination, such as bacteria and water. Marinas that do not pass the test must have their tanks treated, cleaned and retested to be free of contamination before they can sell ValvTect Marine Fuels. Marinas that pass the test are then “Certified” and awarded a “Certificate of Contamination Free Storage Tank” that can be displayed on the fuel dock to tell boaters their fuel storage tanks meet ValvTect’s quality control requirements.

No E15 Fuel At ValvTect Certified Marinas

Phase separation in ethanol blended gasoline

NORTHBROOK, ILLINOIS (USA) - While E15 (15% ethanol, 85% gasoline) fuel will be available at land-based gasoline stations where a large percentage of US boat owners fill their fuel tanks, it will not be sold at the gasoline fuel pumps at ValvTect Certified Marinas any time soon.

On October 13, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved the sale and use of E15 for all 2007 and later automobiles and light duty trucks. The EPA’s approval did not include the use of E15 in marine engines until further tests are completed.

PHOTO CAPTION: Phase separation of ethanol and water from the gasoline can occur with ethanol blended gasoline.

“Although E15 is not approved for use in marine engines at this time, it is possible it may work its way into the marine industry. To be certain there is no misunderstanding, the sale of E15 will be strictly prohibited at all Certified ValvTect Marinas at this time,” said Jerry Nessenson, President of ValvTect Petroleum. “Violation of this policy will result in the marina being decertified as a Certified ValvTect Marina,” he added.

To warn boaters, the EPA will require pump labels with a warning that E15 should not be used in marine and other non-approved engines. However, boaters should be cautious and make sure to use a quality ethanol treatment, such as ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline Treatment, whenever they use an ethanol/gasoline blend.

“ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline Treatment is formulated to help prevent fuel related problems, such as poor stability, corrosion and phase separation with E10 and higher ethanol blends such as E15. However, no fuel additive can prevent compatibility problems with certain fuel hoses and fiberglass fuel tanks. Until the EPA completes its testing on marine engines and fuel systems with E15 and approves its use, we will not recommend the use of ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline Treatment in E15 so as to not encourage the misuse of E15 fuel,” Nessenson said.

All ValvTect Marine Gasoline sold at ValvTect Certified Marinas is formulated with ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline Treatment. For boaters who fill their fuel tanks at land-based gas stations, ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline Treatment is available in aftermarket containers at marine supply stores nationwide.

BoatU.S., ValvTect Renew Co-Operative Fuel Program

NORTHBROOK, ILLINOIS (USA) - BoatU.S., the USA’s largest organization of recreational boaters and ValvTect Marine Fuels, the largest supplier of marine fuel, have renewed a cooperative agreement that identifies BoatU.S. Cooperating Marinas that are also Certified ValvTect Marinas.

Certified ValvTect Marinas participating in the BoatU.S. program are identified with the ValvTect Marine Fuel logo on their individual web pages on www.boatus.com/MSL.

Under the agreement, ValvTect also identifies each BoatU.S. Cooperating Marina at www.valvtect.com. “We are pleased to highlight BoatU.S. Cooperating Marinas on our web site where BoatU.S. members can receive a discount on ValvTect Marine Fuels, as well as other products and services. As a lifelong boater and 35-year BoatU.S. member, I appreciate the many services BoatU.S. offers,” said Jerry Nessenson, President of ValvTect.

ValvTect Marina Fuel Tank Testing

“Our half a million members own a wide variety of boats with many types of engines, but they all want fuel that can stand up to harsh marine environments,” said BoatU.S. Cooperating Marina Program Manager David Mann. “ValvTect’s gasoline and diesel fuels help them avoid having a bad day on the water, giving them one less thing to worry about. It’s a smart partnership and just another way how we make boating better for our members,” he added.

Gasoline and diesel storage tanks at some marinas can contain excess water and other contaminants, such as bacteria, algae and water. These contaminants can be pumped into a boat’s fuel tank and can cause an engine to shut down or sustain permanent damage. The new grades of ethanol gasoline, ultra low-sulfur diesel and biodiesel can make this situation even worse. (PHOTO CAPTION: Fuel storage tanks at Certified ValvTect Marinas are tested for water, bacteria and other contamination up to twice a year.) Download a high res version of this image at: www.homeportmarine.com/news/valvtect/tanktest.zip.

To combat this problem, all Certified ValvTect Marinas must have their fuel tanks tested before they are allowed to sell ValvTect Marine Fuels and up to twice a year thereafter. “Our mandatory tank testing program, plus special hydroscopic fuel filters that are also required at all ValvTect Marinas’ fuel pumps, help ensure ValvTect Marine Gasoline and ValvTect Marine Diesel are free of contamination such as water and bacteria. Marinas that do not pass the test must have their tanks cleaned and retested to be free of contamination before they can sell ValvTect Marine Fuels,” Jerry Nessenson said. Marinas that pass the tank test are awarded a Certification of Contamination Free Storage Tank certificate that can be displayed on the fuel dock.

ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline Treatment:
The Perfect Winterizing Solution For Ethanol Gasoline

ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline Treatment

EDITORS: Download a high res image of the ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline treatment bottle at: www.homeportmarine.com/news/valvtect/ethanol.zip.

NORTHBROOK, ILLINOIS (USA) - With ethanol blended gasoline making up over 80% of the nation’s gasoline supply, traditional gasoline stabilizers that only stabilize the fuel do not provide the total protection needed to assure marine engines will be in top notch condition next spring.

Although many gasoline stabilizers provide improved stabilization, they do not also provide protection against corrosion and dreaded phase separation - both can ruin next years' boating season.

To provide protection against the ravaging effects of ethanol and entrained moisture over the log winter lay-up, ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline Treatment is the perfect winterizing solution that can provide stabilization for up to two years, help prevent corrosion of internal engine components and phase separation.

To prove the total performance of ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline Treatment, ValvTect Petroleum authorized a series of laboratory tests at one of the nation’s most prestigious independent petroleum laboratories. In addition to ValvTect’s ethanol treatment improving the stability of the E10 (90% gasoline plus 10% ethanol) by 186%, it also received a perfect A rating for corrosion prevention and showed the ability to retain moisture and ethanol in the E10 fuel that can help prevent phase separation, especially during winter storage.

ValvTect will also help boaters save money with a $2.00 rebate per bottle that can be obtained in boating magazines including BoatUS Magazine, Boating and Soundings and at ValvTect’s web site. ValvTect Ethanol Gasoline Treatment can be purchased at West Marine and other marine supply stores nationwide.

ValvTect Completes Testing Marina Fuel Tanks For Contamination

NORTHBROOK, ILLINOIS (USA) - Unfortunately, it is all too common for gasoline and diesel storage tanks at marinas to contain excess water and other contaminants, such as bacteria, algae and debris. These contaminants can be pumped into boaters’ fuel tanks and can cause an engine to shut down or permanent damage. The presence of ethanol gasoline and ultra low sulfur diesel fuel makes this situation even worse.

ValvTect Marina Fuel Tank Testing

To combat this problem, all Certified ValvTect Marinas must have their fuel tanks tested before they are allowed to sell ValvTect Marine Fuels and up to twice a year thereafter. This testing, plus special hydroscopic fuel filters that are required to be installed on all ValvTect Marinas’ fuel pumps, helps ensure boaters that ValvTect Marine Gasoline and ValvTect Marine Diesel are free of contamination.

Marinas that do not pass the test must have their tanks treated, cleaned and retested to be free of contamination before they can sell ValvTect Marine Fuels. Marinas that pass the test are awarded a “Certification of Free Storage Tank” certificate that can be proudly displayed on the fuel dock.

(PHOTO CAPTION: Fuel storage tanks at Certified ValvTect Marinas are tested for water, bacteria and other contamination up to twice a year.) Download a high res version of this image at: www.homeportmarine.com/news/valvtect/tanktest.zip.

“We believe the ValvTect Quality Control Certification program is the only program of its kind in the marine industry. While it is costly and time consuming, we believe it is essential to provide boaters marine grade fuel that will not only provide better performance, but also prevent fuel related engine problems caused by a contaminated fuel tank,” said Jerry Nessenson, President of ValvTect Petroleum.

Boaters can look for ValvTect’s certificate indicating the marina’s fuel tanks have been tested and certified free of contamination where ValvTect Marine Gasoline with Ethanol Gasoline Treatment and ValvTect Marine Diesel with BioGuard are sold. Both ValvTect fuels are specially formulated for marine engines to prevent ethanol and ultra low sulfur diesel fuel problems.
